Florida blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning on Saturday night to fall 5-2 to the Ole Miss Rebels and dropped the weekend series.

Jacob Kendall notched the first hit of the day for either team with a triple off the wall in the third. He scored on a wild pitch two batters later. Kolt Myers singled in Landon Stripling in the seventh for a much-needed insurance run.

Russell Sandefer went seven shutout innings and struck out 11 for Florida. Cade Townsend was nearly as good for Ole Miss, giving up just one run through six. JP Robertson took over for Townsend in the seventh and gave up the second run.

Joshua Whritenour relieved Sandefer in the eighth, which went fine, but the bullpen imploded in the ninth. Ole Miss scored five runs on three hits, including a game-tying homer from Judd Utermark. Ernest Lugo-Canchola walked the only batter he faced, and Cooper Walls hit the only batter he faced. Luke McNiellie got all three outs, but not before three more runs crossed on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single from Hayden Federico.

Sandefer was masterful, but Florida’s bullpen completely blew it.

Stripling led off with a single, and Stanford lined out to center. Kendall struck out looking for the third time in a row. This one was not in the zone, just like the rest of them. Caden McDonald pinch-hit for Yost, but he struck out to end the game.

Florida’s bullpen implodes, gives up lead

Whritenour returned for the ninth, but it was a mistake. He was a bit wild and walked Bissetta, setting up a game-tying home run from Utermark. Kevin O’Sullivan left him in, but a single to right field forced a pitching change.

Ernesto Lugo-Canchola walked the only batter he faced, Paino. Cooper Walls took over and hit Goldin, prompting another change. Luke McNeillie came in with the bases loaded and no outs. He traded a flyout to center for arun, giving Ole Miss the lead.

McNeillie got a big strikeout on Fawley with a slider, but he couldn’t limit the damage after that. Federico singled in two more runs with a line drive into center. McNeillie struck out Decker to end the inning. The Gators need three to keep playing. (M9: Ole Miss 5, Florida 2)

Gators three outs from taking the series

Hooks came back out for the eighth. He got Surowiec to strike out and Bowen to ground out back to the mound. Bowen has done that at least five times this weekend. Kurland squibbed one to the right side, but he couldn’t beat out the pitch to Hooks, who covered the bag just in time. (M8: Florida 2, Ole Miss 0)

Whritenour throwing gas for Florida

Whritenour took over for Sandefer in the eighth. He got behind Randle 3-1 but attacked after that to get the strikeout with a 99-mph heater up in the zone. Whritenour ramped it up to 100 mph to strike out Fawley. He lost Federico for a walk, but he retired the side on a flyout to right field from Decker. (M8: Florida 2, Ole Miss 0)

Myers gives Florida an insurance run

JP Robertson took over for Townsend to start the seventh, and Stripling immediately got to him for a leadoff single. Stanford dropped down his first sacrifice bunt of the year to get Stripling over to second, but Kendall struck out looking at a ball that looked low. Sully and Tom Slater were not happy with the call, but it was a borderline pitch.

Yost walked to put two on, and Myers delivered the biggest hit of the night, a line drive single to right-center, scoring Stripling. Ole Miss went back to the bullpen after that.

Left-hander Walker Hooks came in to face Jones. He induced a popup behind second base that Decker tracked down and laid out for. (E7: Florida 2, Ole Miss 0)

Sandefer shuts out Ole Miss through seven

Sandefer got his 10th strikeout of the night on a slider to Utermark, but the pitch went all the way to the backstop. Usually, the runner will beat it out in that scenario, but Bowen jumped to it and fired it to the outside bag for the out. While the first baseman typically has to play the white bag, he’s allowed to set up on the green one in this situation.

Sandefer struck out Furniss for No. 11 on the day, but Paino extended the inning with Ole Miss’s second base hit — a single up the middle. Florida got Josh Whritenour going in the bullpen, but Sandefer finished off the inning with a groundout from Goldin. (M7: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Three up, three down for Florida in sixth

Florida went down in order again in the sixth. Surowiec grounded out to short, Bowen grounded out to first, unassisted, and Kurland flied out to deep center field. As well as Sandefer as pitched for the Gators, his offense hasn’t offered much run support against Townsend. (E6: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Kolt Myers delivers web gem

Myers made a tremendous play for the first out. He ranged toward the cut of the grass on his backhand side and fired a ball across the diamond for the out. It looked close to impossible for a smaller player, but nobody is going to doubt his arm strength moving forward.

Federico lined out to right field for the second out. Sandefer thought he had strike three on Decker, but the umpire didn’t call it, which led to the first walk of the game. He bounced back with a three-pitch strikeout on Bissetta, who whiffed at a changeup. (M6: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Nothing doing for Florida in the fifth

Yost tapped one up the first-base line, but Townsend fielded it and gave a hard punch-tag to him for the out. The first base umpire was yelling at Yost not to respond, but he didn’t say a word. Weird. Myers watched a curveball drop in for a called strike three. That’s three backward Ks in the last four batters for Townsend.

Jones hit another ball hard, but it found Goldin’s glove at the warning track in left field. Rough day for Jones, but he’s putting good swings on it. (E5: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Sandefer keep cruising through fifth

Owen Paino pinch-hit for Reuter, but he wasn’t able to stir up some offense. Sandefer got him swinging at a changeup, and Goldin popped out behind shortstop for a quick second out. Randle only saw two pitches, grounding out to second base for Sandefer’s fourth 1-2-3 frame. (M5: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Gators strike out looking twice to strand a pair

Bowen led off the bottom of the fourth with a groundout to first, but Kurland found a hole up the middle for a base hit. Stripling dropped one into right field, putting two on. Kurland had to wait for the ball to find grass and didn’t get to third.

Stanford struck out looking at a 12-6 curve that dropped into the zone. It might have been outside, but that’s a pitch that has to be swung at with two strikes. Kendall looked a similar pitch for strike three, but that’s much tougher on a lefty. (E4: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Sandefer works around leadoff base hit

Sandefer gave up his first hit of the game to Decker on a leadoff single that dropped in front of Yost in right field. He didn’t blink, though, and retired the next three batters on nine pitches. Bissetta, a lefty, struck out on a changeup, and Utermark, a righty, fanned at a slider. Sandefer’s breaking stuff is working well tonight, and batters aren’t ready for it because they have to respect the 96-mph heater.

Furniss grounded out to second to strand Decker at first. (M4: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

Kendall triples and scores to give Florida the lead

Jacob Kendall smashed a ball to right field to open the bottom of the third. It looked gone off the bat, but the ball ended up bouncing off the wall for an easy triple. Hayden Yost couldn’t drive him in with a shallow popup to center field, but Townsend skipped a breaking ball into the dirt and past Fawley to bring Kendall in.

Kolt Myers pulled one through the 5-6 hole for Florida’s second hit of the inning. Jones lined out to center field again, and Surowiec swung at a slider for strike three to end the inning. (E3: Florida 1, Ole Miss 0)

First time through the order, no problem for Sandefer

Sandefer left one over the plate for Brayden Randle, but he grounded out to second. Kuland made a routine play, shading over to his left. Austin Fawley went down fanning at a slider, which has been untouchable from Sandefer so far. Jones tracked down a fly ball in left-center that the wind got hold of and made tricky. (M3: Florida 0, Ole Miss 0)

Florida’s offense not figuring out Townsend

Offense isn’t coming easy for either team early. Florida went down in order again in the second. Cade Kurland pulled a slider into left-center for a flyout, and Landon Stripling lined one into the wind for an out in right-center. Cole Stanford struck out swinging at a slider to end the inning. Townsend is at 22 pitches through two innings. (E2: Florida 0, Ole Miss 0)

Six up, six down for Sandefer, Florida

Will Furniss battled for a nine-pitch leadoff at-bat, but Sandefer won, inducing a ground ball to shortstop. Kolt Myers charged it and made a strong throw to get the out. Sandefer got the second out a bit quicker, striking out Collin Reuter on three pitches. Reuter fanned at a slider that landed in the dirt before heading back to the bench. Cannon Goldin saw four pitches, but they were all strikes. He tipped a high fastball into Bowen’s glove for the third out. (M2: Florida 0, Ole Miss 0)

Townsend answers with his 1-2-3 inning for Ole Miss

Kyle Jones swung at the first two pitches he saw from Cade Townsend. Jones lined out to center field but made good contact on a 98-mph fastball. Ethan Surowiec grounded out to third, swinging at a 2-0 cutter that moved outside the zone. Karson Bowen struck out swinging on a breaking ball that dropped in the zone to end the first inning. (E1: Florida 0, Ole Miss 0)

Sandefer puts up a zero in the first

Russell Sandefer went 1-2-3 in the first. He went right at Dom Decker for a flyout to right field. He struck out Tristan Bissetta and Judd Utermark to finish off the clean frame.

Sandefer was mostly cutter (91 mph) and four-seam (95-96 mph) early. It’s a good pitch mix at different velocities with opposite horizontal movement; strong arm-side run on the four-seam. He used the 83-85 mph slider twice to get Utermark. (M1: Florida 0, Ole Miss 0)

NOTES: Russell Sandefer looked good against Arkansas last week, even though he gave up three runs on six hits. He didn’t walk anyone and looks more comfortable in the starter role than Cooper Walls did. He threw a season-high 83 pitches, which should mean he’s got the green light to go as long as he’s able to on Saturday. He’s not in much danger of losing his spot in the rotation, but being the newcomer should keep his adrenaline up in his second weekend start.

Cade Townsend broke out as a freshman last year, and he’s been just as good in his sophomore year. He only allowed one run through 18 2/3 innings during non-conference play. His fastball is up to 96-97 mph, and he holds 95 through the fifth inning. He also has a power curve that sits in the mid-80s with 2800 RPM, an upper-80s cutter and an upper-80s changeup.

SEC play has been a bit rough on him, but only four of the seven runs he’s allowed are earned. He struck out eight against Mississippi State last weekend.
