Tickets are available for a free islands event that will feature an eco-educator and PBS star.
BIG ARTS will host its Family & Friends Day on April 11 beginning at 4 p.m. at its Sanibel campus. It will include Rockin’ Eco Hero Steve Trash, plus live performers, art projects, food, drinks and more.
It is the third year for the annual event.
“We started this to open BIG ARTS to the community and to the families in the community,” Marketing Director Meghan Govoni said, explaining that their seasonal programming is typically geared more toward adults. “So this is for school-aged kids and families of all ages.”
It will open with a show by Trash in the Christensen Performance Hall.
The star of a nationwide PBS kids science show, “Steve Trash Science,” he offers an award-winning blend of magic, music and eco-fun. Trash has appeared on national and international TV shows, including CBS “This Morning,” ESPN “Outdoors” and VH1 “Top 20 Countdown.” He was recently interviewed on Levar Burtons’ “Reading Rainbow.”
“It’s family-friendly and it’s kid-friendly. And it’s a little different than we’ve done the past two years,” she said, noting that the first event featured a circus and last year’s event involved an animal show.
After the show, there will be outdoor festivities in the Malone Family Sculpture Garden.
“We have Citrus Circus. They bring fun entertainment,” Govoni said, adding that there will be a stilt walker and a hula hoop performer, and the hula hoop person will teach a class on different moves.
Led by Arts Education Director Aimee Harrisson and The Sanibel School art teacher Erica Sharp, who works with BIG ARTS as a youth instructor, there will be a couple of make-and-take art projects.
“They’re going to be running an arts and crafts booth,” she said, explaining that in previous years the activities were more kid-focused, but this year’s offerings will be aimed more at the whole family.
There will also be demonstrations by BIG ARTS instructors and the gift shop artists.
Rib City will provide a family-friendly spread, plus cookies and brownies for dessert.
“It’s going to be like a make-your-own-slider bar — pork and chicken — along with sides,” Govoni said.
Refreshments, including water and soda, will be available.
“We always do a kids’ mocktail,” she added. “Something on theme with the event.”
In addition, the galleries and gift shop will be open for attendees to enjoy.
Stevens Construction is the event sponsor.
“A huge thank you to them for generously sponsoring us,” Govoni said. “We’re happy to be working with them.”
While it is a free event, tickets are required.
The community is encouraged to secure a seat for the show.
“It’s a chance to spend time with the community, to be together, and to experience something that the community is passionate about with this eco-friendly performance,” she said. “It’s fun for all ages.”
“And it’s a nice way to kind of cap off the BIG ARTS season,” Govoni added.
