ORLANDO, Fla. (WCJB) – A lawsuit filed against the owners of an Orlando news station by the estate of former TV20 reporter Dylan Lyons is being dismissed.
Lyons was shot and killed while reporting for Spectrum News 13 in February 2023. He was reporting on a murder case in Pine Hills, west of Orlando, when the shooter, Keith Moses, returned to the scene, killed Lyons, and injured photographer Jesse Walden.
Lyon’s family filed suit against Spectrum’s parent company, Charter Communications, claiming they were negligent in sending Lyons to report on the murder.
Federal court records show that Judge Anne Conway dismissed the suit, saying Lyons’ family’s lawyers weren’t able to prove that the newsroom misrepresented the danger in sending Lyons to a crime scene.
Lyons’ family is still suing the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. They allege that an Orange County deputy on-scene told Lyons that there was no threat in visiting the crime scene, even they had not caught Moses.
