MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — As gas prices continue to strain household budgets across South Florida, two churches stepped in over the Easter weekend to offer drivers some much-needed relief at the pump.

Transformation Church in South Dade and New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Miami each covered up to $25 worth of gas per vehicle, helping dozens of residents fill their tanks as fuel costs remain high.

At a gas station in South Dade on Saturday, volunteers from Transformation Church worked quickly, asking drivers what grade of fuel they needed before filling their vehicles free of charge. For Pastor Xavier Jones, the effort was about more than just gas.

“We’re blessing people with free gas, as many people as possible, and it’s Easter weekend,” Jones said. “We felt that it was a way for us to give back to the community. We just want to be the hands and feet of Jesus and help people during these difficult times.”

Drivers lining up expressed gratitude, saying even a small break made a meaningful difference.

“I don’t have that kind of money to be spending,” said Priscilla Alexander. “Gas is too high, expensive.”

Another driver, Kimmel Solomon, called the gesture a blessing. “God is blessing me with a full tank of gas,” Solomon said. “Not only with gas, but with a blessing.”

Similar scenes played out in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, where volunteers with New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church filled tanks with up to $25 worth of gas at a nearby 7-Eleven. The giveaway offered immediate relief for drivers forced to make tough choices between basic necessities.

“My truck takes $70, and guess what?” one driver said. “This little $25 helped me out a whole lot.”

Senior Pastor Al Jackson Jr. said the church wanted to ease the burden many families are facing.

“There’s a lot going on in the world today, and for many people they’re trying to figure out whether they’re going to buy gas or buy groceries,” Jackson said. “So today, New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church decided if they take care of the groceries, we’ll help with the gas.”

Organizers have not said whether similar gas giveaways will take place in the future, but for many drivers, the Easter weekend outreach offered both practical help and a reminder of community support during challenging times.
