TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will investigate possible “forever chemical” contamination in the Woodville area, according to the department.
The announcement comes after a group of doctors, geologists and local commissioners raised concerns about PFAS, believing one source is the City of Tallahassee’s wastewater spray field.
Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor and City of Tallahassee Commissioner Jeremy Matlow sent a letter to the DEP last month, urging testing of the impacted area.
The department responded saying they are “committed to protecting Florida’s water resources and ensuring safe drinking water for residents.”

In the letter from the DEP, the department said it will coordinate with the Florida Department of Health to “expand private well sampling in the Woodville area.” It will also offer filters to residents where PFAS contamination is found.
Part of the testing will including a sampling plan to evaluate potential sources of PFAS. If a contamination source is identified, DEP “will ensure appropriate delineation of the affected area and oversee any necessary remediation.”
DEP’s letter did not indicate when testing would begin but did say it would keep the city and county offices updated as work progresses.
