PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Two elderly people were rescued early Wednesday after their vehicle rolled into a pond and became partially submerged near East Caribbean and Cam De Entrada, according to the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

Police said the single-vehicle crash happened just after 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Investigators said an elderly woman was driving with an elderly male passenger when she turned too early and, while trying to reverse back onto the roadway, the vehicle slid down an embankment and rolled into the water.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle submerged up to its windows, according to the department. Police said officers immediately entered the water and pulled both occupants from the vehicle, bringing them to shore to be evaluated by rescue crews.

Both the driver and passenger were taken to St. Lucie Medical Center as a precaution and were reported to be in good health, police said.
