Lee County commissioners approved a $290,580 task authorization on April 7 with Coastal Engineering Consultants to advance planning and permitting for a future dredging project at Blind Pass.
The inlet between Sanibel and Captiva has recently filled with sand, limiting tidal exchange between Pine Island Sound and the Gulf. Work includes engineering design, environmental surveys, permitting and construction preparation.
Dredging could begin in 2027, depending on shoreline conditions, wildlife nesting, weather and contractor availability.
The project aims to restore tidal flow and improve ecosystem health. Sand removed during dredging will be used to nourish critically eroded shoreline areas on northwestern Sanibel.Â
