The Jacksonville baseball team lost its first Central State Eight Conference game this season, falling to perennial powerhouse Chatham Glenwood 9-2 at Future Champions on Tuesday.
Tied 0-0 after three innings, Glenwood scored eight earned runs off Crimsons ace AJ Charpentier in the top of the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Tuesday’s game was Charpentier’s first loss this year. He allowed seven hits in three-and-one-third innings pitched, with four strikeouts and one walk. Talan Harney pitched the final three-and-two-thirds for the Crimsons.
Trailing 9-0, Jacksonville scored a pair of runs in the sixth for the final margin.
JHS had its chances early. The Crimsons had two runners on with two out in both the first and second innings, and they had two on with one out in the third, but they could not get the hit they needed against Glenwood starter Dylan Huff.
Cy Kershaw had two hits to lead Jacksonville, which finished with five hits for the game.
Jacksonville (7-4, 2-1 CS8), was to have hosted Normal University (10-1) on Wednesday.
Eli Cox and Brady Clendenen combined for a four-hit shutout as the Carrollton baseball team beat Staunton on Tuesday.
Cox started the game on the mound and shut out Staunton on four hits through five-and-one-third innings pitched. He struck out seven and walked three. Clendenen held Staunton hitless over the final inning-and-one-third, striking out four of the five batters he faced.
Carrollton scored its first run in the bottom of the second. The Hawks loaded the bases on a single by Landon Grafford, an error and a walk to Jayce Steinkuehler. Clendenen followed with a fly ball out to drive in Grafford. Charlie Stumpf, who had reached on the error, was out advancing to second.
Then in the fifth, Carrollton’s Reed Schnettgoecke led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Cox, went to third on a ground out and scored on an error to make it 2-0.
Carrollton finished with five hits. Clendenen hit a double for the Hawks’ only extra-base hit.
Carrollton improved to 4-3.
NOKOMIS 10, GREENFIELD-NW 0
The Greenfield-Northwestern baseball team was held to one hit in a loss at Nokomis on Tuesday.
Nokomis scored in every inning, plating four in the first to take an early lead.
Kayden Roberts hit a single with one out in the fourth to break up the no-hitter.
Mason Winters took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits in three-and-two-thirds innings pitched. He struck out four and walked one. Lucas Springman pitched the final inning, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked no one.
The Tigers slipped to 3-9.
