Riviera Heights Reactivates Neighborhood Watch
SEMINOLE — Riviera Heights held its first Neighborhood Crime Watch Meeting in over six years March 24.
A 150-home neighborhood just west of Seminole High School, Riviera Heights is between Oakhurst Road and 134th Street.
Approximately 30 people, representing 10% of the neighborhood or 15 households, attended the meeting. The last meeting was before the pandemic.
Riviera Heights Neighborhood Watch, founded in September 2001, is celebrating its 25th year. Current Watch Chair Kevin Walker stated that “one week before our inaugural meeting 25 years ago, September 11th happened.”
“Our very first meeting was Tuesday evening Sept. 18th, 2001. It was held in Seminole High School’s cafeteria and had close to 50 people in attendance.”
The Neighborhood Watch Association was technically inactive. The meeting held March 24 reactivates the Neighborhood Watch.
All in attendance voted unanimously to participate in a Neighborhood Alert Telephone Text Tree. The Neighborhood Watch communications director acts as a communication hub. The neighborhood residents can text him about suspicious activity such as prowlers, police searching for people or even unusual door solicitors. This alert is then texted individually to all of the participants of the Alert Telephone Text Tree.
