It looks like the Mayor of Flavortown has touched down in Tampa Bay.
Not even an hour ago, a Reddit post in r/tampa began to make its rounds, showing what appears to be well-known flame-shirted food hero, Guy Fieri, posted up outside Supernatural Food & Wine in downtown Tampa.
But is it really Mr. “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” in the flesh?
The sighting, first flagged by florida_man_13, places Guy Ramsay Fieri outside Supernatural’s bright yellow awning, texting amid a small crew in tow while one commenter even joked that it looked like Creative Loafing Editor-in-Chief Ray Roa sat nearby. Roa declined to comment for this post and calls to Supernatural founder Wesley Roderick were not returned.
One user being unloaded on Tuesday, the same day Mr. Flavortown was set to appear at Corona Cigar Factory. Fieri is also set to appear at Lueken’s Liquor on N Dale Mabry Highway this afternoon.
Adding a little gasoline to the donkey sauce: the post speculates that the visit could be tied to an episode of the 58-year-old’s world famous Food Network show, which would make sense given Tampa Bay’s quietly booming restaurant scene, and Alton Brown’s christening of Supernatural’s breakfast sandwich, saying it was the “best he’s ever had.”
Roderick previously told CL that Brown’s endorsement saved Supernatural—formerly known as Nojak’s—from closing.
So, what’s going on?
That remains to be seen, but this is how it usually starts. A casual sighting. A camera crew. A few days later, a beloved local spot is canonized in the Flavortown extended universe, propped up amongst other under-the-radar gems.
Other restaurants Fieri has visited in the Tampa Bay area include Ybor City’s Tampa Bay Brewing Co., St. Pete’s Buya ramen, and Keegan’s in Gulfport.
Or maybe Fieri just wanted a really good glass of natural wine and a snack on one of the coolest blocks in town.
