A 17-year-old Dr. Phillips High School student was arrested Thursday after bringing a gun to school, police say.
The student had a loaded 9mm pistol in his backpack, according to a statement from the Orlando Police Department. The school’s resource officers received a tip that the student had the weapon, and when they confronted the student in class, he ran, according to the statement.
Police caught and arrested the student, who now faces charges of possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor and resisting arrest without violence.

“This is exactly how it’s supposed to work. Our officers acted quickly on a tip from the community,” said Chief Eric Smith in a statement.
OPD did not provide additional details, citing the active nature of the investigation.
The Orlando Sentinel is not naming the student as it is not clear yet if he will be charged as an adult.
