Tampa police were investigating a shooting Monday that critically wounded a man near a busy intersection in the Channel District.

The shooting happened about 9:20 a.m. near the intersection of West Kennedy Boulevard and North Meridian Avenue, according to the Tampa Police Department. Investigators believe a man in his 50s shot another man, also in his 50s.

The shooter was detained at the scene and officers recovered a gun. The man he shot was taken to a hospital and listed in critical condition, police said.

Investigators believe the two men know each other and that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between them that happened on Friday, according to police.

Police have not released either man’s name.

Police were diverting westbound traffic on Kenney Boulevard while the investigation was underway.
