Police say a Cutler Bay man waited in his car a block away for a man to come out of his Hialeah house and then fatally shoot him late last month.

Hialeah detectives say Johnny George Mays, 48, shot the man several times in the upper body with a .9 mm handgun before driving off around 7 a.m. Saturday, March 28. Police found the man’s body in his driveway in the 600 block of West 15th Street, along with five spent bullet casings, according to Mays’ arrest report.

Detectives arrested Mays Thursday, and he is being held on first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He has entered a written plea of not guilty, and a judge Monday ordered him held without bond until trial.

The victim’s name is not mentioned in the arrest report, and Hialeah police have not responded to questions about his identity or possible motive.

According to the arrest affidavit, detectives watched footage from several security cameras in the area that showed Mays approaching and leaving the area. Footage also showed Mays park the car a block away, waiting there for a little more than an hour for the victim to exit his house, the report states.

Mays then drove up to the man, got out of his car and shot him before getting back inside the vehicle and leaving, according to the report.

Detectives tracked down the car’s registered owner, who told them Mays had the vehicle since late last year, according to the report.

Police found Mays Thursday near Southwest 77th Avenue and 192nd Street inside the gated Cutler Cay subdivision, the report states.

According to the arrest report, Mays has previous felony convictions for armed robbery and drug trafficking.
