It wasn’t the kind of driver that is welcome on a golf course, as a Springfield man found out Saturday when Jacksonville police arrested him.

Police were called at 5:03 a.m. Saturday to The Links Golf Course, 321 Holkenbrink Drive, and arrived to find a 2019 Hyundai Elantra leaving the course and heading into Nichols Park, according to a police report.

The 34-year-old driver was stopped, but not before hitting the patrol car of one of the officers who responded, according to police. Both vehicles sustained minor front-end damage, according to the report.

The driver was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and booked into the Morgan County jail before later being released on his own recognizance, according to court records.

A hearing date has not yet been scheduled.

Employees were out Monday assessing the severity of any damage to the golf course.

“It doesn’t appear he was trying to tear anything up,” Jacksonville Police Lt. Sean Walker said. “He was just inebriated and did not know where he was.”
