A 15-year-old student at Parkway Middle School in Lauderhill has been charged with a felony after bringing a BB gun to the campus, police said.
On Monday morning, the school “received information from a student and parent about a possible weapon on campus,” Intern Principal Ackimo H. Charles said in a message shared with families.
The male student had been seen “displaying” a weapon before getting on a bus to school, Lauderhill Police said in a news release Tuesday. After the incident was reported to the school, one of the school’s behavioral technicians notified a school resource officer about the student with the weapon.
The two statements did not provide additional details about where the teen was seen with the weapon.
Once on campus, the teen was found running through the campus and was detained by the school resource officer, the news release said. A BB gun that resembled a handgun was found in his backpack.
There were no threats to any students or staff, Broward County Public Schools spokesperson Cathleen Brennan said in an email Tuesday.
The teen has been charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, a felony charge, and possession of a BB gun by a minor under the age of 16.
