FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill renaming State Road 80 to “President Donald Trump Highway,” sparking mixed reactions across Southwest Florida.

The new law designates all 124 miles of State Road 80, from Lee County to Palm Beach, after President Trump. The road starts in downtown Fort Myers and stretches across the state.

Residents have varying opinions about the change. Some, like Paula Ciccarelli, support the decision.

“I think it’s fabulous. Common sense prevails,” Ciccarelli said.

Others expressed frustration with the renaming. Gary Winthrope said he was upset by the news.

“I was kind of enraged at it, ya know?” Winthrope said. “It doesn’t need to go that far.”

Some residents fall somewhere in between. Mary Valcante and Doris Clemente said they support some signs as a tribute but don’t think the entire road needs to be renamed.

“I think it should be a highway for all of the people, not some of the people,” Clemente said.

WINK News reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation to determine what the signage changes could look like and how much they could cost. FDOT is working to gather that information.
