ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Prosecutors are now seeking the death penalty for a St. Petersburg woman who was arrested in the murder of her 4-year-old son.

Back in January, St. Petersburg police said Diana Cullom suffocated her son, Finley Cullom, at their home in Shore Acres before cutting herself on her arms.

St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway said Cullom’s 16-year-old daughter called the police after she got home and found her mother and brother covered in blood.

Cullom was later charged with first-degree murder for her son’s death.

Wednesday, April 1, State Attorney Bruce Bartlett filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty.

According to prosecutors, the murder was committed under aggravating circumstances that warrant Cullom’s death. Several of the circumstances relate to the fact that the victim was Cullom’s child and allegations that the murder was committed “in a cold, calculated, and premeditated manner without any pretense of moral or legal justification.”

If convicted and sentenced to the highest extent of the law, Cullom would join the small number of women who have been on death row in Florida.

The Florida Department of Corrections states that only two women have been executed in Florida: serial killer Aileen Wuornos and Judias Goodyear Buenoano, a “Black Widow” who killed both her husband and her paralyzed son.

Only one woman is on death row: Tina Brown. She was sentenced for the murder of Audreanna Zimmerman, who was beaten with a stun gun and crowbar before being set on fire.
