The Florida Gators dropped the rubber match against the Auburn Tigers, 8-5, on Saturday at Condron Family Ballpark.

Blake Cyr put Florida up early with a three-run home run in the first. Cyr has homered in all three games this series. Russell Sandefer took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but a leadoff error and walk set up a sacrifice fly to get Auburn on the board. Sandefer gave up his first hit of the day to Mason McCraine, who singled in his brother to make it 3-2, Florida.

Florida’s offense sputtered for the rest of the game, going 1-for-21 between the second and eighth innings. Alex Petrovic looked elite after giving up the homer to Cyr. Auburn got to Joshua Whritenour in the eighth. Bub Terrell hit a game-tying home run, and then the Tigers plated five in the ninth to take a commanding 8-3.

Errors were the big issue for the Gators, with Ethan Surowiec making three at third base and Whritenour throwing a ball away on a bunt in the ninth.

Blake Cyr hit another home run in the ninth, this time with one man on base, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

Lawsona and Surowiec went down in three pitches, but Florida had some fight left in it with two outs.

Bowen singled into right field, and Cyr hit a no-doubter over the left field fence. Stripling rifled one to the right side, but Bingaman leaped up to grab it and end the game. Tough loss for the Orange and Blue.

Florida’s bullpen melts down

Whritenour gave up a leadoff single and then a third error from Surowiec led to a spiral that didn’t stop for a while. Steele bunted, and Whritenour threw it away instead of getting the out at first. Auburn took a one-run lead, but there were plenty more to come.

Brandon McCraine doubled in two more, bringing in Ricky Reeth to pitch.

Reeth gave up a two-run home run to Mason McCraine, making it 8-3.

Reeth got Guevara to ground out, but he was pulled after walking Fralick and giving up a base hit to Rembert. Caden McDonald struck out Belyeu, who pinch ran for Madrigal at the start of the inning. Absolute disaster. (M9: Auburn 8, Florida 4)

Another 1-2-3 frame for Auburn

Ryan Hetzler took over for Petrovic in the eighth. Hetzler was pumping 97-98 mph out of the gate, and Stanford couldn’t catch up to it. Yost got under one for a flyout to center, and Jones did the same. Hetzler only needed six pitches to get through the inning. Florida is 1-for-21 since the first inning… (E8: Florida 3, Auburn 3)

Bub goes deep to tie things up

Bub Terrell led off with a solo homer to tie the game. Whritenour left a fastball middle-middle, and Terrell didn’t miss it. Mason McCraine grounded out to first for the first out. Guevara singled through the right side to put the go-ahead run on base, but Fralick and Rembert both flied out to end the inning. Cyr made a terrific diving catch in shallow left to rob Fralick of a bloop hit that Lawson lost in the sun. (M8: Florida 3, Auburn 3)

Petrovic continues to roll for Auburn

Petrovic has been very impressive for Auburn since the first. He’s still throwing 94 mph as he approaches 100 pitches and has retired 11 of the last 12 Gators he’s faced. Cyr struck out looking, freezing on a frontside breaking ball. Stripling grounded out back to Petrovic and Kuyrland grounded out to third. Hopefully, Florida’s offense can get to the bullpen for some insurance. (M8: Florida 3, Auburn 2)

Whritenour takes over for ELC

Bingaman reached base for the third time to open up the seventh — error, walk, hit. Lugo-Canchola got Steele to fly out to left, but that was the end of his day. Sully came out and signaled for the righty, which ended up being closer Joshua Whritenour. Bingaman took off for second, but Bowen gunned him down. Auburn challenged, but the call was upheld. Whritenour struck out Brandon McCraine with one of those 92 mph sliders and strutted off the field (M7: Florida 3, Auburn 2)

Florida’s offense has gone cold

The Gators have just two baserunners since Cyr’s three-run homer in the first. Jones singled and got picked off in the third, and Stanford walked in the fifth. The middle of the order couldn’t do anything in the sixth. Lawson grounded out to second — really, it was shallow right field because of the shift — and Surowiec grounded out up the middle. Bowen flied out to center field for a 1-2-3 frame. (E6: Florida 3, Auburn 2)

Lugo-Canchola with a nice pickoff move

Lugo-Canchola came back out for the sixth. He got a pair of fly outs but allowed a single to Rembert between them. Fortunately, a nifty pickoff move caught Remert running on first movement, and Stripling made the throw over to second with plenty of time to get the out. (M6: Florida 3, Auburn 2)

Gators go hitless in fifth

Kurland looked like he was going to get a home run, but the ball ended up at the warning track for an out. That’s the second time Kurland has just missed today. Unfortunate for him. Stanford walked, bringing up Yost, who struck out looking. Jones was flied out to right-center. Florida isn’t swinging poorly, but the balls aren’t falling. (E5: Florida 3, Auburn 2)

Auburn chips away at Florida’s lead

Surowiec booted another one for his second error of the day, allowing the leadoff man to get on. Sandefer walked Steele on five pitches. Brandon McCraine grounded into a fielder’s choice at third. Surowiec fielded this one cleanly, but McCraine was too quick to double up. McCraine swiped second without contest.

Terrell put one into the right field corner that looked like a sure two-run double, but Yost made another unreal play to rob him. Bingaman still scored after tagging up, but it could have been much worse.

Mason McCraine drove in his brother with Auburn’s first hit of the day. Sandefer is already nearing 90 pitches, so the no-hitter wasn’t happening regardless of what happened.

Ernesto Lugo-Canchola took over for Sandefer with two outs in the fifth. Guevara took the first pitch he saw for a ride, but it died at the warning track. Cyr gloved it to end the inning. (M5: Florida 3, Auburn 2)

Another quick inning on offense for Florida

Petrovic has been lights out since giving up the home run. He only needed five pitches to get through the fourth. Bowen popped up to shallow right field, and Blake Cyr grounded out to third. Auburn’s third baseman bobbled it a bit and rushed the throw, but the first baseman made the tag in time. Stripling checked his swing but made contact to send it right back to Petrovic on the mound. (E4: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Sandefer works arond two-out error

Sandefer struck out Guevara for a quick first out. Fralick lined one into right field that looked like a sure hit, but Yost laid out and made a web gem to keep a goose egg in the hits column for Auburn. Rembert grounded ot third, but Surowiec couldn’t handle it. It was a fairly clear error, so the goose egg remains. Sandefer didn’t panic after that. He got an easy groundout to second base to end the inning. (M4: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Jones leads off with hit but gets caught stealing

Jones led off with a single to center. He tried to steal second and was initially called safe. However, his momentum took him off the bag, and the umpire ruled the secondary tag as an out. Jones didn’t like it, Kevin O’Sullivan didn’t like and the crowd didn’t like it. Sully went out to the field immediately and argued for a while, but the replay showed it was a fair call.

Lawson struck out looking but saw eight pitches. Surowiec nearly fouled out to right, but Bingaman dropped it. The kids on the berm pointed and laughed before asking for the ball as a souvenir. Surowiec ended up grounding out to the pitcher to end the inning. (E3: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Six-pitch inning for Sandefer

Brandon McCraine flied out to Yost in right, Bub Terrell grounded out to second and Mason McCraine grounded out to second base for a six-pitch frame for Sandefer. Good defense, great pitching. Sandefer is rolling. (M3: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Nothing for Florida in second

The Gators hit the ball hard twice in the second inning, but they still went down in order. Cade Kurland flied out to left-center, near the warning track. Stanford grounded out to second base, where the defensive shift had a man perfectly played and standing behind the bag. Hayden Yost struck out to end the inning. (E2: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Ground balls to first base are no problem

Sandefer is working the bottom of the zone well with his two-seamer. He got a pair of groundouts to Stripling at first from Chris Rembert and Eddie Madrigal. That’s three straight unassisted plays for Stripling, going back to the last inning. Ethin Bingaman worked an 11-pitch walk, fouling off five balls against Sandefer. Lucas Steele couldn’t capitalize on the walk, though, and grounded out to — you guessed it! — first base, unassisted. Four straight outs to first is a fun oddity. (M2: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Stay hot Blake Cyr! Gators take early lead

Kyle Jones struck out looking at a 95 mph heater that caught him by surprise. Alex Petrovic set Jones up with a couple of sinkers and then attacked with the four-seam. Petrovic didn’t go after Brendan Lawson at all, walking him on four pitches. Ethan Surowiec extended his hit streak to eight games with a single through the left side. Petrovic had to pitch to him after giving up the free base to Lawson.

Karson Bowen lined out hard to center field, but Blake Cyr crushed a home run to left field. Cyr has homered in every game this series, and this one was a moonshot. McCraine threw his hands up, indicating he lost the ball, but it was all the way up the berm. Landon Stripling hit it hard to center field, the same as Bowen, but it ended up as an easy out. (E1: Florida 3, Auburn 0)

Sandefer starts things off with a 1-2-3 frame

Russell Sandefer struggled with command last week, leading to an early exit in the second, but he’s attacking the strike zone early against Auburn. He got behind each batter in the first, finding himself in a pair of 3-0 counts, but he regrouped and retired the side in order.

Sandefer struck out Mason McCraine, induced a flyout to right from Eric Guevara and got Chase Fralick to ground out to first, unassisted. That’s the confidence booster he needed. (M1: Florida 0, Auburn 0)

NOTES: Russell Sandefer really struggled on Sunday, but Florida’s offense had his back. The goal for Sandefer is to get back on track this week. He didn’t make it through the second and gave up five runs a week after going seven shutout innings. That’s two ends of the spectrum in as many weeks, so no judgments should be made either way yet.

Alex Petrovic has been a nice surprise this year for Auburn. He made five starts last year before missing most of the season with an injury. Like the other Tigers starters, Petrovic has a low batting average against (.201) and good strikeout-to-walk numbers (53 K, 9 BB). — David Rosenberg
