TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County is lowering flags to half staff in honor of former Clerk of Courts Dave Lang, who died Sunday after a battle with cancer.
Leon Commissioner Chair Christian Caban announced Monday that flags will be at half-staff for the next five days.
Lang served in the Clerk of Courts office for more than 40 years. He first began working for Leon County in 1959 and served as deputy clerk for many years before being elected Leon County Clerk of Courts in 1992.
He is perhaps best known for helping to navigate Florida’s capital county through the tumultuous 2000 election with its many recounts and court challenges.
Lang retired in 2001.
“Dave Lang devoted more than four decades of his life to public service in Leon County, and his legacy is embedded in the institutions that still serve our residents today,” Caban said.

The City of Tallahassee recently renamed a section of Jefferson Street to honor Lang’s 40 years of service.
“It’s wonderful,” Lang said at the renaming ceremony last month. “To me, it could not be better. Today puts the cherry on top.”
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey also presented Lang with a key to the city that day.
“Both myself and my family were deeply honored because we love this community and I spent 42 years of my life in that courthouse,” Lang said during an interview in February, “and I grew up watching that place and all the events there, so I was extremely honored, I’ll tell you that.”
Lang was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, his son Chuck Lang shared at the renaming ceremony, just weeks before his passing.
“So, to time that now before he’s gone, while we still have him, was just a blessing on top of a blessing,” he said.
