A convicted rapist known as the “pillowcase rapist,” who is accused of terrorizing women across South Florida in the 1980s, appeared back in court on Tuesday and is once again facing a jury.

Prosecutors in Miami-Dade County are hoping to convince jurors that Robert Koehler sexually assaulted a woman in Southwest Miami-Dade back in 1984.

During opening statements Tuesday morning, prosecutors said Koehler broke into the victim’s home, tied her up with a telephone cord, and assaulted her.

He earned the nickname for covering his victims’ faces during the attack.

For decades, the case went unsolved until 2020, when investigators said DNA evidence linked Koehler to the crime.

Koehler has consistently denied being a serial rapist, but he’s already been convicted twice in Florida.

Court records show he still faces six open cases in Broward County and two more in Miami-Dade involving similar attacks.

One of those Miami-Dade cases is now underway.
