ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The St. Petersburg Police Department said a 46-year-old man is dead after attempting to break into someone’s home just after midnight on Saturday.
At around 12:20 a.m., officers responded to the home on 2nd Avenue North after reports of shots being fired in the area. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.
A preliminary investigation found that the man had crashed his car in the surrounding area before fleeing the scene and winding up in the backyard of a home in the 3000 block of 2nd Avenue North. The circumstances surrounding the crash are unknown at this point.
He then tried to break into the home from the back, the sound of which woke up the homeowner.
Neither the deceased suspect nor the homeowner have been identified by SPPD.
The homeowner ordered the man to leave the property, but he persisted in his attempts to break in, SPPD said. After refusing to leave, the suspect was shot by the homeowner.
No one aside from the suspect was injured in the incident, but three adults and a child were home at the time of the attempted break-in.
SPPD said the homeowner has not been charged and that the investigation is ongoing.
