WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Update: A 29-year-old Wichita man has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder in the death of a 25-year-old woman who died from injuries after a shooting on April 17.
Wichita police said at 8:03 a.m., officers were dispatched to the shooting at 7272 E. 37th St. They arrived to find Unruh near Building 5 with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene.
Unruh was taken to a local hospital in very serious condition.
Joshua Orlando, 29, who was married to but separated from Unruh, was taken into custody at the scene. He was taken to the Wichita Police Investigations Bureau for an interview and later booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a charge of aggravated battery.
On April 20, Unruh died from her injuries.
Following her death, Orlando was rebooked for first-degree murder. The case was presented for formal charges to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office the morning of April 21.
Police said the crime was the result of domestic violence.

Police believe the shooting was related to domestic violence.
Domestic violence seems to be on the rise, according to the Wichita Family Crisis Center. It’s a domestic violence resource center that says it’s seen a 74% increase in crisis hotline calls in the last three years.
“It’s just absolutely heartbreaking to hear about this case. It just seems like there’s been higher numbers that we’ve seen at the crisis center,” said Maggie Donley, the development director at Wichita Family Crisis Center. “And not just higher numbers. Higher violence as well, and the severity of the cases.”
Donley said it’s important to recognize that early warning signs of abuse that can often precede physical violence.
“The emotional violence and verbal abuse,” Donley said. “Your partner isolating you from your friends and family. Are they pressuring you to go into some hobbies, or habits, that you don’t want, like drugs or alcohol?”
If you fear for your safety, or believe someone you love may be a victim of domestic violence, it’s time to seek help.
“If you are a victim of domestic violence and you’re in crisis, please call 911,” Donley said.
Donley shared that the Wichita Family Crisis Center can help with a variety of things, including shelter resources.
“You can please call us,” Donley said. “We are there, even if you are not seeking shelter. We are here to guide you in any questions you have.”
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation statistics show that in 2024, there were 60 domestic violence incidents reported every day in Kansas.
Donley said it can be hard to navigate why domestic violence numbers are trending up, but that her organization is doing everything it can to raise awareness.
“It’s happening all around us, even if it’s behind closed doors,” Donley said. “If we could just talk about it openly with our friends and family, I think that’s super important for community awareness.”
