The Caring Place at Miami Rescue Mission (MRM) and Broward Outreach Centers (BOC) conducted street outreach events ministering to over 2,000 homeless and hungry on Good Friday and beyond.
The theme, “Giving Thanks,” offered more than 200 volunteers an opportunity to show their passion and purpose in serving nearly 2,000 guests with a Thanksgiving-style meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, and assorted pies.
Following the example of Jesus who washed the feet of his disciples, volunteers from the Podiatry Department of Barry University washed the feet of homeless men and women who came to the street outreaches. At both centers, clothing, shoes and hygiene items were offered to guests. All guests in Miami were offered showers as well.
Intake tables encouraged guests to make the decision to enter one of the life-changing programs on one of the campuses. Nearly 40 men and women made that choice to come off the streets of Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
Ministry teams were seen throughout the outreaches, praying with people individually and offering Easter candy treats. Sponsors Miami Vineyard, Fleet Advantage, MER LLC, and Dade Construction helped make this event possible.
Easter baskets for the children were made possible by supporters like Bank of America, St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church/School, WMODA as well as individual and many business partners.
“I came to outreach just looking for a meal, but I found something greater, hope,” said Marcus, past outreach attendee and now current resident. “The people here reminded me that my life still has purpose. I joined the Regeneration Program, and that decision has transformed my life. Today, I’m stepping into a new chapter and I feel like a new man!”
At the Miami Center, attendees enjoyed a Good Friday message by Manuel Ramos of Christian Church Foundation of Faith Inc. The Miami Sound Space Choir blessed guests with a special performance. Guests enjoyed a special resurrection play performed by residents.
The over 1,000 Easter baskets donated by caring community partners were given to at-risk children at the conclusion of the event. Granada Presbyterian Church volunteers assisted with the foot washing of guests.
Special guests Joseph Dion, councilmember, City of Miami Springs; Kevin Burns, councilmember, City of North Miami; Alex J. Fernandez, commissioner, Miami Beach; Kassandra Timothe, vice mayor, North Miami Beach; Mary Estime-Irvin, councilmember, North Miami Beach; Rhonda Anderson, vice mayor, Coral Gables, and McKenzie Fleuimond, commissioner, North Miami Beach, joined the Miami Center celebrations and served guests their meals as well as greeted everyone.
The staff prepared and cooked over 200 turkeys for the event along with all the trimmings.
Thanks to the Mickle Family there was a special appearance by the Easter Bunny who took photos with the children as he gave them their Easter baskets and went to all the tables to spread some cheer.
