Fundraising already underway to help Jamaica residents after the hurricane

  • October 29, 2025

TAMPA, Fla. (WWSB) – A Jamaican citizen affiliated with a student group at the University of South Florida is working with a Canadian chef on the island to mobilize an effort to feed communities devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

Joshua Shirley, a member of the Jamaican Alliance Movement at USF has created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for supplies and ingredients to help Chef Matthieu Masson-Duceppe cook for people who will likely lose everything from one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded.

“Along with providing ingredients for as many people in need as possible, your donations will be used to rebuild homes and assist residents of the Portland Cottage area in Clarendon,” the GoFundMe page says.

Masson Duceppe has also created a GoFundMe for the effort. “We are currently looking for cooks, dishwashers, any help we can get to join our team so we can prepare thousands of warm meals for families who may lose access to food and essential supplies,” the page says.
