The College Football Playoff has announced Tampa, Fla., as the host for the national championship during the 2028 season. Event organizers and local dignitaries announced the news on Wednesday at Raymond James Stadium, where the game is scheduled to be played on Jan. 22, 2029.

“The city has established itself as an exceptional host for world-class sporting events, and its vibrant downtown, beautiful waterfront and proven commitment to excellence make it an ideal setting for college football’s greatest night,” CFP executive director Rich Clark said. “We look forward to partnering with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission and local leaders to deliver a national championship experience worthy of college football’s biggest stage.”

The format of the Playoff during the 2028 season remains unclear. The bracket expanded from four teams to 12 last season and will remain at 12 this fall. But the administrators who oversee the CFP continue to discuss future changes — including potential expansion to 16 or 24 teams. A decision for next season’s format is expected by Dec. 1.

Tampa also hosted the national title game during the 2016 season. Clemson won its first national title under Dabo Swinney when quarterback Deshaun Watson hit Hunter Renfrow with 1 second left to give the Tigers a 35-31 win over Alabama. Raymond James Stadium has also hosted three Super Bowls, most recently the hometown Buccaneers’ 31-9 win over the Chiefs during the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2021.

This season’s title game will be Jan. 19 in Miami. The next two sites are Las Vegas (January 2027) and New Orleans (January 2028).
