Teen killed after losing control of car and crashing into tree, St. Pete police say

In St. Petersburg, a teen driver died after losing control of his car on a wet road, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A teenager died in St. Pete when he lost control of his car.

The St. Petersburg Police Department said Sunday that Angel Burke, 18, from St. Pete, died from a crash in front of 6818 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street North.

Police said Burke was driving his Dodge Charger southbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North, heading toward 70th Avenue North. When he tried to pass another car, he lost control on the wet road, according to SPPD.

Burke’s car began to slide sideways, hitting a tree on the driver’s side. Officers reported that he was pronounced dead at the crash site.

 So far in 2026 in Pinellas County, there have been 4,242 vehicular crashes, resulting in 16 deaths and 2,636 injuries, according to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
