TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – May 3-8 marks Hurricane Preparedness Week, and emergency management officials in Leon County are urging residents to make a plan before hurricane season begins.
Leon County Emergency Management Director Kevin Peters said families should start talking now about what to do in an emergency, with hurricane season less than a month away.
“It’s too late to wait until a storm is formed and forecast to come this way” he said.
Peters said now is a good time to create a safety plan and assemble a disaster kit for each member of the household.
“It’s important. It will reduce the stress and anxiety during hurricane season if you take the time to talk about it now,” Peters said.
He said disaster supply kits should include:
BatteriesEmergency radioFirst aid kitFlashlightGames and toysMedicationsNon-perishable foodPet suppliesSpecial family needs (diapers, feminine hygiene items, etc.)WaterWaterproof bag with family documents, including driver’s license, insurance information, out-of-area contact, medical information
Peters said the week is also a good time to review insurance policies and create a home inventory.
