Authorities are searching for 18-year-old Norrien Casminski, who is suspected of shooting two 19-year-olds at a Port St. Lucie shopping center over the weekend, resulting in one victim’s death on Monday from a gunshot wound to the head. That led us to the registered owner’s house, which led us to the search warrant, which led us to taking two people. One in custody and one for an interview at that point. Which helped us identify our shooter and the other suspect,” Niemczyk said. The department has been using advanced technology, including drones, since 2018 to assist in solving cases more efficiently. “Drones were used on each of the scenes that we operated. We use them to, one, document everything from the air. So, everything is, you know, the position, the location where they are gets recorded and codified. It also allows us to observe for officer safety reasons when we’re working on a particular scene,” Niemczyk said. Port St. Lucie police are working to develop a first responder drone program while building a real-time intelligence center. “Which is going to loop in our license plate readers, our cameras throughout the city. So, leveraging technology to keep the community safe is at the core of what we do is incredibly important. As you can see, it’s very advantageous. It helped us to solve this incident overnight, essentially, and take two into custody and have the third identified. We have an arrest warrant for that individual,” Niemczyk said. Investigators worked through the night into Sunday afternoon to locate the suspects, deploying over a dozen officers from SWAT and K-9 units, along with additional personnel. “Additionally, we had probably another six to 12 officers involved between the drone. Then we had the SWAT team involved because they actually executed our search warrants for the investigators, so a significant amount of resources were deployed,” Niemczyk said.
