As of 9:30 p.m., voters in Miami County were soundly rejecting a temporary 0.5% increase of the county’s sales tax, which would fund construction of a new jail and renovation of the current jail facility on North County Road 25A, according to partial, unofficial results from the Miami County Board of Elections.
The early results show 39.78% of votes cast in support and 60.22% against the tax increase, which was proposed to expire after 10 years.
Miami County voters were also rejecting the renewal of an existing property tax levy to fund current expenses for the Troy City Schools District by a 46-53 ratio, according to the partial, unofficial results.
The proposed renewal is not to exceed 5.8 mills, which amounts to $111 for each $100,000 in property valuation per year, according to the county auditor. It’s proposed for a period of five years, with an estimated $4.6 million collected annually.
Partial unofficial results from other Miami County ballot issues are as follows:
Piqua Public Library: Renewal of an existing property tax levy to fund current expenses was passing with a 67-33 ratio. The proposed renewal is not to exceed 1.8 mills, which amounts to $46 for each $100,000 of county auditor’s market value per year, for a continuing period of time, with an estimated $990,824 collected annually.
Village of West Milton: Voters were approving the continuation of an existing levy of 0.5% on income to fund police and fire services for a period of five years with a 61-39 ratio.
City of Union: Voters in Miami and Montgomery counties were rejecting the continuation of an existing 1.5% levy on income and a 1% levy increase on income to fund police and fire operations, equipment maintenance and acquisition, and debt service, with a 62-38 ratio.
City of Union: Voters in Miami and Montgomery counties were approving the renewal of an existing property tax levy to fund construction, surfacing/resurfacing, and maintenance of streets, roads and bridges, with a 53-47 ratio.
