Singer Emily Estefan’s girlfriend was arrested Tuesday in Miami-Dade after being accused of domestic violence, jail records showed.
Gemeny Hernandez, 31, was charged with two counts of strong-armed robbery and battery, Miami-Dade Jail records showed.
Estefan is the daughter of Cuban-American singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan and Cuban-American musician and film producer Emilio Estefan.
During Hernandez’s court appearance on Wednesday, Estefan was present and said she didn’t think Hernandez should be in jail.
“No, I didn’t want her to be in jail,” she said. “I begged the detective and the officers not to take her there. Whenever they come for domestic case, somebody’s getting arrested.”
According to an arrest form obtained by NBC6, on Tuesday night, the couple got into a physical altercation when Hernandez forcefully took Estefan’s cellphone and hit her with it.
The two continued struggling for the device, the report said. After Estefan got it back, she put it in her pocket, and the two continued to struggle.
Hernandez, the report said, was able to get the phone again, and both of them fell to the ground, and Estefan was able to get the phone once more.
Estefan then called 911, but said in court, she didn’t expect her girlfriend to get arrested.
“Yeah, is she going to stay back in your house, or are you going to do a cooling-off period?” said the judge.
“No, no, no, no. I don’t want to put any kind of restraining order,” Estefan said. I’m very cool with her family. I just want her, honestly, I think it’s best for the both of us if we do take some space. But she doesn’t deserve to be there in jail.”
The judge set Hernandez’s bond to $3,000.
NBC6 has reached out to an Estefan family spokesperson, and they declined to comment.
