CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WFLA) — A dog was rescued after falling into a canal in Cape Coral on Thursday.

At 2:40 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol reported that one of their state troopers observed a lost dog running south on the sidewalk of Del Prado Boulevard, near SE 15th Terrace.

The trooper said that the dog ran down SW 16th street and darted between houses before jumping into a saltwater-filled canal.

Concerned for the dog’s well-being, FHP said that the trooper followed the dog, locating it in the canal where it was whining.

The trooper found some rope and quickly made a makeshift slip to help the dog to a floating dock area.

While attempting to the help the dog onto the dock, the trooper fell into the canal as well.

After getting himself and the dog out of the canal, the trooper transported it to a vet clinic for a medical examination.

The dog has been named “K9 Valor” for the bravery that it displayed in the face of adversity, according to FHP.

Lee County Animal Control has been notified.
