The University of Georgia and Florida State University mutually agreed to cancel their scheduled home-and-home football series for 2027 and 2028 on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The decision stems from evolving conference schedule mandates within the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
The two programs are currently discussing the possibility of a future neutral-site meeting to replace the original games, which were set for Tallahassee and Athens. Florida State Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford noted that the change will not reduce the total number of home games for the Seminoles.
“As we considered the effects of evolving scheduling mandates within both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, we have mutually agreed that it is in the best interest of both schools to cancel our home-and-home series,” said Michael Alford, FSU Vice President and Director of Athletics.
The cancellation follows a broader trend of scheduling turbulence in college football. Alabama and Oklahoma State also scrapped their 2028-2029 series this week, with Oklahoma State quickly replacing the Crimson Tide with a home-and-home series against Michigan State.
Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart expressed uncertainty regarding the long-term impact of the SEC’s move to a nine-game conference schedule. Smart noted that the expansion often leads to a higher volume of losses, which may affect how the College Football Playoff committee evaluates team strength.
The Bulldogs have previously canceled similar high-profile series against UCLA, Louisville, and NC State since July 2024. Despite these changes, Georgia maintains future home-and-home agreements with Ohio State and Clemson scheduled for the early 2030s.
Separately, the ACC announced its first international game in Canada, with Syracuse and Wake Forest scheduled to open the 2027 season in Toronto. The Week 0 contest at BMO Field continues the conference’s push into international markets following previous games in Ireland and planned matchups in Brazil.
