PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Chipola will not be making its 7th trip to the JUCO National Tournament after a tough day Monday against Miami Dade in Tampa.
The Indians losing to the Sharks by a score of 5-1 in the Region 8, or State Final game Monday. Thus, ending Chipola’s season at 45-13. Coach Johnson’s squad easily among the best in the country but left out of the ten-team national tourney which does not allow for at-large berths.
The Indians opened at State with a 5-4 win over conference rival Northwest Florida Friday. The lost Saturday to Miami Dade in the winner’s bracket game 11-4. They bounced back to beat Manatee 8-1 in an elimination game. Then beat Miami Dade Sunday 4-3, setting up Monday’s winner takes all finale.
The Sharks got a run in the second on a fielder’s choice. Then came back to tie it when Kane Moye drew a two out bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third.
However, an infield error in the 5th helped put Dade back ahead at 2-1. Then a three-run homer in the 7th sealed it for the Sharks, who’s pitchers combined to hold Chipola to just one run.
Since only the Region, or State champ advances to the ten-team national tournament, the Indians, despite 45 wins this season while playing in one of the toughest conferences, and in perhaps the toughest region, get left out of a chance to play for National title.
