LOVERS KEY STATE PARK, Fla. (WINK) — Lee County deputies jumped into action to rescue three girls caught in a rip current at Lovers Key State Park.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office released video this past weekend showing the heart-pounding rescue
Deputy Tellez Ferriol, also known as CB-15, kicked off his shoes, took off his duty belt and jumped into the water. He swam out to three young girls who were being pulled away from shore and helped bring them safely back to the beach.
LCSO is increasing patrols near beaches and sandbars ahead of the busy summer season. They’re urging everyone to check beach warning flags, understand water conditions and never underestimate the strength of the current.
“I think if you come to the beach, you’ve got to know and understand what you are getting yourself into and know your abilities and what they are not,” Stephen Smyth said.
In a rip current, deputies say don’t fight it. Stay calm, float and swim parallel to shore until you’re out of the current. Officials said the next emergency could happen to anyone.
