Jacksonville police will host a free motorcycle safety class later this month, according to Jacksonville Public Safety.

The Jacksonville Police Department is partnering with the Governor’s Highway Safety Program to offer Rider Skills Days, which provide motorcyclists with skills assessments and professional safety feedback.

The next class is scheduled for Friday, May 22, beginning at 8:45 a.m. at the Department of Public Safety, 200 Marine Blvd. in Jacksonville. Registration is required by Wednesday, May 20.

Officials said participants must have a legal motorcycle endorsement or learner’s permit, and their motorcycle must be insured.

Jacksonville Public Safety said the police department has been a BikeSafe sponsor since 2010. The department has four BikeSafe assessors, all of whom are certified instructors, with Sgt. James Smallwood serving as the agency’s site coordinator.

“The Bike Safe program offers motorcyclists in Jacksonville a hybrid educational experience with the opportunity to provide individual feedback on road performance from our certified Assessors,” Police Chief Jarad Phelps said.

There is no cost to attend. More information about course details, schedules, and requirements is available at bikesafenc.com. Questions can be directed to Smallwood at jsmallwood@jacksonvillenc.gov.
