Las Olas Boulevard has always held special meaning to me. Growing up in the 1960s, I spent time at my father’s business, David’s Bridal, on the boulevard, and now, as a Colee Hammock resident for nearly 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching Fort Lauderdale evolve over the decades.
While the west end of Las Olas has experienced tremendous growth, investment and revitalization, the east end has remained relatively unchanged for years. I believe the proposed Weston Jewelers project at 1117 E. Las Olas Blvd. represents the thoughtful progress that could finally help bring new life and energy to that part of the boulevard in an elegant and sophisticated way.

Weston Jewelers is not simply another retail store. It is a highly respected South Florida family-owned business with a reputation for quality, professionalism and community presence for 25 years.
Businesses such as this build trust over decades, and relationships with world-renowned luxury brands are not easily earned.
As an official Rolex retailer, Weston Jewelers would bring a level of prestige and credibility that would naturally elevate the surrounding area and help position East Las Olas as a premier destination.
It’s important to recognize that this is a local family business, not a large outside corporation coming into Fort Lauderdale. I have watched the Dikes family work tirelessly over the years to slowly build their business and reputation through hard work, integrity and personal relationships in the community.
They are present in their stores every day, are deeply involved in their businesses and genuinely care about their clients and the city where they have invested. Families like theirs are exactly the kind of local businesses our community should want to support.
The proposed flagship would offer a high-end experience, including a dedicated bridal studio, a state-of-the-art service center, custom design consultations, and exclusive access to some of the most sought-after pieces in the world. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed to make guests feel not just welcomed, but truly celebrated.
It would create the kind of destination experience that attracts residents and visitors year-round, including the slower summer months. Visitors coming to Weston Jewelers would also frequent nearby restaurants, shops, hotels and businesses, creating more walkability, energy and economic activity for East Las Olas as a whole.
It is important to recognize that the scale of this project is very much in line with the surrounding area — and not too large as some may lead others to believe.
The proposed building is five stories, which is consistent with neighboring properties, including the office and restaurant building across the street from my community.
Nearby residential buildings are already four stories tall, and a recently approved hotel on the next block will rise substantially higher. In my opinion, this project fits naturally within the evolving character of East Las Olas while still being thoughtful and respectful of the neighborhood.
Projects like this also encourage additional investment in the surrounding area. Respected luxury retailers attract well-known brands and businesses that want to be part of an evolving destination, creating momentum that helps great streets grow and thrive over time.
East Las Olas has the opportunity to evolve into a destination comparable to other upscale areas such as Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Miami, while maintaining the unique character that makes Fort Lauderdale so special.
Some people may be hesitant about change, which I understand. But not all change is negative.
Thoughtful investment keeps cities vibrant and competitive while preserving the charm and history that residents value so deeply. Fort Lauderdale is growing rapidly, and East Las Olas should continue evolving alongside it in a way that reflects the city’s future while honoring its past.
This project is about investing in the future of Las Olas and creating a beautiful, high-quality space from a trusted local jeweler that will help elevate part of East Las Olas with the potential to become something truly wonderful.
As a Colee Hammock resident and someone with deep personal ties to Las Olas, I believe it is an honor that Weston Jewelers has chosen Fort Lauderdale for this investment. I strongly support this proposal and the thoughtful vision it represents for our community’s future.
