Stetson stunned No. 3 Florida State 8-3 in the opening round of the Tallahassee regional.
The Hatters jumped out to an early lead, posting a 5-1 advantage in the top of the third before the Noles plated two in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit. But Stetson responded in the fourth, as Annabella McClerren knocked a two-out two-RBI single to put the Hatters up 7-3.
FSU was held scoreless in the next three innings from the combined efforts of Ava Braswell and Hayley Arnold in the circle while Stetson added another insurance run in the top of the sixth.
The Noles stranded two runners in the bottom of the seventh as Braswell led her team to victory.
This win is the Hatters’ second in NCAA tournament history and its first over Florida State since 1987 came from a full team effort as eight players recorded a hit.
Stetson’s win marks the third time that a national seed has lost in a regional opener by four or more runs since top 16 seeding began in 2005 (Northwestern 2009, UCLA 2012).
