A Seminole High School student was arrested Thursday after a gun was found on campus, while a second is accused of bullying the student who reported it, Sanford Police Department announced.
The 17-year-old student accused of having the gun, whom the Orlando Sentinel isn’t naming because he has not been charged as an adult, was found in a closet as school resource officers scoured campus looking for him. He was charged with possessing a firearm while under the age of 18, possessing a firearm on a school campus and disruption of a school function.
The second student, 16, was also charged as a minor with tampering with a witness. Both were sent to the Seminole County Juvenile Assessment Center.
Chief Cecil Smith applauded the student who reported the gun for coming forward, saying there is “zero tolerance for anyone who jeopardizes the safety of students and staff in our schools.
No injuries were reported, and no other details have been released.
“Bullying someone for reporting a serious crime, such as having a gun on a school campus, will not be tolerated,” Smith said in a statement. “Again, we are thankful for the student who chose to do the right thing and report the student. We will continue to encourage any student to always ‘see something, say something.’”
