A wildfire that burned more than 11,000 acres over four days in the Everglades in western Broward County has been extinguished.
The Max Road fire, which began Sunday in the Everglades southwest of Miramar and Pembroke Pines, was 100% contained by Wednesday afternoon. The fire covered a total of 11,446 acres, Florida Forest Service Everglades District said.
A second Everglades fire continues to burn in Miami-Dade County, the 172nd Avenue fire near Florida City. It is 80% contained and has covered a total of 315 acres, according to a Florida Forest Service map.
South Florida is expected to see “above-normal” levels of significant wildland fire potential through August, according to a report newly released by the National Interagency Fire Center.
