OVIEDO, Fla. — Garbage and recycling rates could soon increase for residents throughout the city of Oviedo.
On Monday, Oviedo City Council members will consider adopting a resolution that enacts increases to the solid waste rates.
They will decide whether to adopt the resolution during their meeting at City Hall, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Currently, residents pay $25 per month for the service, which staff say covers garbage, recycling and yard waste collection. Nearly 12,460 residents are billed for solid waste services.
If approved, the rate would jump to $29.29 per month — a 17% increase for the 2026 fiscal year. On Oct. 1, residents would start paying $29.59 for fiscal year 2027. The rate would gradually increase between 2% and 3% each fiscal year until residents are billed $32.16 for fiscal year 2030.
Lisa McDonald, the city’s communications manager, said Oviedo has not raised rates in five years, despite higher costs from Seminole County and Waste Pro.
“If we continue on the same path not raising the rates, we’re gonna start to go under when it comes to waste, so we need to increase these fees,” McDonald said.
She explained the city has seen higher costs because of an “increase in collection,” which means there has been an increase in waste.
“People are using more, disposing more, and we see spikes during hurricane season as well,” McDonald explained. “So if there is yard waste collected by Waste Pro, there’s an increase during either large storms or during hurricanes.”
According to the agenda, “Existing rates will result in a net loss in each year of the Projection Period, confirming the need for revenue increases in future years to fund operations.”
City leaders and staff talked about increasing disposal rates during a work session on March 30.
