BUSHNELL, Fla. — Sumter County board of commissioners are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss, among other things, an update on an agreement between the city of Bushnell and Arcadis U.S. Inc., to provide third-party oversight of the Heart of Florida Landfill.

This follows months of complaints from residents in South Sumter County regarding a foul odor. The city has not confirmed exactly where the smell is coming from, but through inspections it was found that Heart of Florida landfill potentially violated its permit conditions and regulatory requirements.

What You Need To Know

Bushnell city leaders have hired a third-party environmental consulting company to help oversee a corrective action plan in place at the Heart of Florida Landfill

The Sumter County Board of County Commissioners will provide an information-only update on the agreement during its regular meeting Tuesday evening

Residents have complained about a foul smell, and health concerns have also been raised regarding the issue

City leaders have not provided a definitive answer on where the smell could be coming from, but they said evidence of an odor was detected within and beyond the property boundary line of the Heart of Florida Landfill

Additionally, city leaders say a strong odor was detected both within and beyond the landfill’s property boundary line.

Following that analysis, the city issued a notice with the intent to revoke the construction and operating permits at the landfill on June 26.

A.C.M.S. Inc., the company that operates the landfill, provided a corrective action plan on July 7, with a deadline to correct those alleged violations by Dec. 1.

According to information from the city of Bushnell, Arcadis U.S. Inc. will provide an “independent evaluation” of the corrective plan, and will “provide third-party oversight and compliance review through site inspections and document analysis.”

Tuesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting will kick off at 6 p.m. at the Everglades Regional Recreation Center, located at 5497 Marsh Bend Trail.
