More than 35,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into Mill Creek early Monday after a bypass pump malfunction, city officials said.
The spill occurred around 2:30 a.m. on May 18 near Dewitt Street when approximately 35,751 gallons of untreated wastewater entered the creek, according to the City of Jacksonville.
City crews stopped the spill around 8 a.m. after replacing a relay on the primary pump.
Officials said crews deployed chlorine tablets and pelletized lime at the site and will continue water sampling at multiple locations along Mill Creek until bacteria counts return to normal.
The city said drinking water was not affected and there is no danger to the public.
The North Carolina Division of Water Resources was notified and is reviewing the incident.
State law requires public notification when 1,000 gallons or more of untreated wastewater reaches surface waters.
