FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Fort Pierce city commissioners voted not to renew the contract of City Attorney Sara Hedges in a 2-3 vote during a meeting on Monday.
The controversy surrounding Hedges began when she allegedly advocated for the termination of the city’s finance director due to a personal wage garnishment issue.
This action raised concerns regarding potential violations of federal worker-protection laws, leading to a heated discussion among commissioners.
During the meeting, Commissioner Michael Broderick defended Hedges, characterizing the discussion as a “witch trial” that stemmed from personal disagreements. He praised her abilities and toughness, asserting that she is effective in her role. Broderick proposed a motion to renew Hedges’ contract for the remainder of its term, which Mayor Linda Hudson seconded.
Mayor Hudson acknowledged the natural tensions that often exist between a city manager and a city attorney but emphasized the importance of collaboration in moving the city forward. However, despite their support, the motion to renew the contract ultimately did not pass.

Following the vote, Hedges expressed her frustration, noting that she felt her ability to respond to the allegations was restricted. She emphasized her commitment to fulfilling her role until the end of her contract, which terminates on September 10.
Commissioner Arnold Gaines, who voted against the renewal, criticized the process leading to the motion, arguing that it did not allow for adequate discussion among all commissioners. He highlighted concerns that the action was rushed and did not consider the views of all members.
As a result of the failed vote, the commissioners decided to table further discussions regarding Hedges’ contract until a review scheduled for June 8. Despite the tensions, Hedges confirmed she would continue her duties in the meantime, reinforcing her availability for future discussions with the commission.
