TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) –Two shootings at the same apartment complex in Chattahoochee over the weekend left one teen dead and an innocent bystander injured.
Chattahoochee Police Chief Michael Miller says shortly after midnight Sunday at the Flint Garden Apartments, several teens were involved in a fight that led to gunfire, and a teenage boy died at the scene.
On Tuesday, family members identified him as Reshards Jackson Jr. His mother spoke with WCTV at the police department and said the family is asking for prayers as they grieve.
“It is a tragic time when a family has to lay to rest a young member of their family, but we also have another family that’s lost a member as well, even though they’re not burying him,” Miller said.
Just hours later, officers responded to a second shooting at the same apartment complex, where a man was shot inside his apartment.
“We’re pretty confident that they were related to each other, not separate acts of violence, but both of them are contained,” Miller said.
Police say the bystander suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
Chief Miller says the department is now speaking with apartment owners and management about adding more security measures at the complex.
“We have reached back out to them again since this incident and expressed our concern for the safety of the residents of the apartments and the need for some type of security to safeguard to keep this from happening again,” Miller said.
Police say one person is in custody in connection with the deadly shooting. Miller also says investigators have identified what he called “good suspects” in the second shooting, though no charges have been announced at this time.
“We try and try to prevent, but we absolutely got to have the help of the community to ensure that we can do our job,” Miller said.
WCTV has reached out to the Flint Garden Apartments for a statement and has yet to hear back.
Police say many details in the investigation remain limited because the case involves people under the age of 18. The investigation is still ongoing.
