If you long for the days when falling in love was more than a swipe to the right or left, when friendships were based on more than an emoji, then St. Pete Opera’s newest production might just be the ticket for you. This June, the company brings La Bohème, one of the most beloved operas of all time, to the Palladium Theater in St. Pete (253 5th Ave N). 

Composed by the renowned Giacomo Puccini, La Bohème tells the story of young artists balancing love, friendship, and everyday life when money is tight. It’s romantic, funny, and (fair warning) you’ll probably want a tissue by the end. Opening night is Friday, June 5, at 8:00 pm, and tickets are available now.

A classic that still feels relevant

Set in the Bohemian Quarter of Paris, the opera follows Rodolfo and Marcello, two artists and friends barely scraping by as relationships and responsibilities pile up. Marcello’s relationship with Musetta is a rollercoaster (lots of flirting, plenty of fighting), while Rodolfo falls for gentle, soft-spoken Mimi. 

Money problems hang over all of them, and Mimi’s health becomes a growing issue as the story goes on. But the friends stick together and find moments of humor and happiness whenever they can, even when life doesn’t make it easy. It’s a story that feels familiar, even more than a hundred years after it first debuted. 

Opera for everyone

Whether you’re a regular at the opera or checking it out for the first time, La Bohème is often recommended as an easy place to start. Puccini’s music is packed with memorable melodies and emotional moments that feel surprisingly modern, even if you don’t know a word of Italian.

The production runs June 5 through June 14, offering plenty of chances to catch a performance. And with the Palladium’s intimate seating and cozy atmosphere, the venue feels like a natural fit for a story that’s as much about everyday relationships as it is big emotions.
