WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — AAA is rolling out a safety net for Memorial Day weekend, giving drivers in Florida a backup plan if they find themselves unable to get behind the wheel safely.

The Auto Club Group announced on Friday that its “Tow to Go” program is active starting at 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. During that window, anyone who has been drinking or feels impaired can call 855-2-TOW-2-GO for a free, confidential ride home — and AAA will even take their car with them.

The goal is simple: keep impaired drivers off the road during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. AAA expects to help more than 350,000 drivers nationwide with roadside issues over Memorial Day weekend alone.

“We don’t want impaired people getting behind the wheel and risking the lives of everyone on the road,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said. “AAA encourages anyone planning to drink or take impairing substances to also plan for a safe ride. Tow to Go can be your backup plan.”

The service is available to both AAA members and non-members, but it’s meant to be used as a last resort — not something to rely on instead of planning ahead. Drivers can’t schedule it in advance, but if they call, a tow truck will pick them up and take both them and their vehicle to a safe place within 10 miles.

AAA says the smartest move is still to plan ahead, whether that means a designated driver, a rideshare, or some other safe option. The Tow to Go program is there in case those plans fall through.

There are a few limitations. The service may not be available in more rural areas or during severe weather, and in some cases, AAA may need to make alternate arrangements to get someone home safely.

The program is available across Florida and several other states, along with select metro areas in Colorado and Indiana.

Officials are reminding drivers that impaired driving is entirely preventable, and taking a few minutes to plan ahead can make all the difference.

“Planning a safe ride in advance can save lives and spare families from devastating loss,” AAA said.
