TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A man was taken into custody Saturday after being shot by Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputies during a confrontation earlier this month, according to a probable cause affidavit.
LCSO said it happened at about 3 p.m., nearly two weeks ago, at Lakeside Travel RV Park on West Tennessee Street. Court records indicated that LCSO was attempting to serve an eviction notice on 59-year-old Charles Patrick Sanders.

After two hours of negotiations, deputies gave him a trespassing warning, but Sanders refused to leave without his belongings, which had not yet been moved.
Court records say additional deputies were called to the scene as Sanders continued to refuse to cooperate and made statements indicating he wanted deputies to shoot him. Deputies continued negotiating after learning Sanders had a pistol on his hip.
According to the affidavit, Sanders told deputies, “In all honesty, you’re going to have to shoot me before I leave.”
At about 3:12 p.m., deputies told Sanders to stand and place his hands behind his back, but he refused. A deputy then tased him, and investigators say Sanders immediately pulled out a pistol and aimed it at deputies. Court records revealed that Sgt. Richard Ash shot Sanders on the right side of his neck and he was taken to the hospital.

After the shooting, deputies searched the residence and found additional firearms and a handwritten note investigators believe was a will. In the note, Sanders referenced having stage four cancer and wrote, “I’m just tired,” records say.
After being released from the hospital on Saturday, Sanders was booked at Leon County Jail and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
According to records, Sanders told an LCSO detective the day after the incident that he should not have been tased. “I asked to stay longer, everything escalated when I was tased, should not have been tased and wanted to get the gun out so it wouldn’t fall on the ground and get damaged.”
His first appearance is set for Monday at 8:30 a.m.
