A large brush fire prompted a major emergency response Sunday afternoon as firefighters worked to contain flames and protect nearby homes and roadways.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded around 2:24 p.m. to reports of a grass fire in southwest Miami, near SW 120th Street and SW 137th Avenue. More than 15 MDFR units, along with the Florida Forest Service, were dispatched to the scene.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and active flames spreading through the area. Due to the size of the fire and concerns about protecting nearby structures, the incident was upgraded to a Second Alarm, bringing additional crews and equipment to help with containment.
Emergency personnel remained positioned around the perimeter of the fire into Sunday evening as operations continued. MDFR said intermittent road closures are expected in the area while crews work to bring the fire under control.
They are urging residents to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to operate safely.
No injuries have been reported.
Smoke from the fire remained visible throughout surrounding neighborhoods. Residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, are advised to stay indoors if possible, keep windows and doors closed, and set air conditioning systems in homes and vehicles to recirculate to reduce smoke exposure.
