FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (WINK)—Memorial Day weekend beachgoers are finding creative ways to beat the extreme heat as sand temperatures soar above 100 degrees.
Drivers lined up on the Matanzas Pass Bridge to get on the island. Boats filled the water as people spent their Memorial Day weekend out by the beach.
People wanted to be close to the water, and umbrellas lined the shore as beachgoers tried to escape the heat. Some folks got creative setting up shop by using the broken pier as shade.
The sand measured 102 degrees with direct sun on it. At one point, the concrete measured 124 degrees.
“Luckily I am wearing crocs or I’d be miserable out here,” beachgoer Hunter Kuhn said.
People are staying cool with portable fans, umbrellas and drinking plenty of water.
