The Mid-American Conference champion NIU baseball team earned a spot in the Tallahassee Regional at Florida State University for the 2026 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship according to the bracket released by the NCAA on Monday. 

Heading back to the National Tournament, the Huskies put an end to a 54-year long regional drought — having last gone to the tournament in 1972. 

After defeating University of Toledo 5-1 on Saturday, the team secured the conference championship and earned an automatic bid into the NCAA championship, where NIU was selected as the No. 3 seed in the regional.

The team will now travel to Florida State’s Dick Howser Stadium to compete in the regional tournament. The Huskies will open against No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina, at 7 p.m. on Friday. The game will be livestreamed on ESPN+.

Entering the regional bracket, NIU faces a challenge against the Sunbelt Conference Championship runner-ups, the CCU Chanticleers. While CCU might not be able to call itself conference champions, the Chanticleers put up an impressive 37-win season. As 2016 National champions and after going 56-13 during the 2024-2025 season, history is on the Chanticleers’ side. 

NIU baseball head coach Ryan Copeland points out CCU’s pitching talent as one of the team’s greatest strengths, highlighting CCU junior right-handed pitcher Cameron Flukey as a potential opening pitcher. 

“He’ll be a probable first round pick in the draft in July. Just elite stuff, really challenging at-bats for hitters, so I’m not sure exactly who they’re going to start yet. I haven’t got there, but yeah, they do everything well on the mound,” Copeland said. “They got a lot of very good arms, a lot of arm talent, and there’s a reason why they’ve been so successful over the last 10 to 15 years.”

Beyond arm power, Copeland also noted that the Chanticleers’ skills lie within defense and assertive strategy. 

“They can do a lot of things very well. They play high-level defense, and they’ll run a ton, they’ll bunt, they’ll hit and run,” Copeland said. 

As underdogs, the Huskies will have an opportunity to prove that NIU has earned a spot on the national field with a win against a well-respected program. The journey does not stop there for NIU though, as No. 10 overall and No. 1 regional seed Florida State (38-17) or No. 4 seed St. John’s (33-24) will stand in their way next. 

When faced with high pressure and attention that comes with the run, Copeland said the Huskies have welcomed the heat. 

“I don’t think they feel any of (the pressure), I think they embrace it. They, you know, forever, you know, being at Northern Illinois, teams of the past, players of the past, would have done anything to get this kind of attention from the media locally and nationally, so our guys embrace it,” Copeland said.

If the Huskies find a way to make it out of the Tallahassee Regional Bracket, it will be the first super regionals appearance in program history, facing the Tuscaloosa Regional winner. The location for the super regional will be announced by 10 a.m. Tuesday on NCAA. 

The winners of the super regionals will then proceed to the NCAA Men’s College World Series beginning on June 12 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Nebraska.

The Huskies’ success this season greatly comes from its pitching staff according to Copeland. The head coach expressed confidence in senior pitcher Max Vaisvila as a Friday night starter after his continuous improvement throughout the season. 

“We’ll roll Max out there. I think he’s as good of a Friday night guy as there is in the entire country. People got really familiar with him at the midpoint this year. He was named National Pitcher of the League after his outing against Bowling Green, and just kept getting better and better,” Copeland said. 

NIU now enters the regional tournament with momentum to continue the most successful season in program history. After waiting more than five decades for another NCAA tournament the Huskies have a chance to show the world that their MAC championship win was only the beginning.
